If you believe abortion isn’t right, that’s completely valid, just as it’s valid for others to make the choice that’s best for them. Abortion should be legal to ensure safe access for people who need it, allowing everyone to make responsible, thoughtful decisions for their own lives. For example, a friend of my mother had to make this choice because the fetus had severe conditions that would lead to a lifetime of suffering, with costs too overwhelming to manage. In such cases, ending the pregnancy can be an act of compassion.
It’s also true that abortion shouldn’t be used as birth control. I don’t think abortion should be used as a backup option by people who are old enough and ready enough to take care of a child. I agree that late-term abortion is not right, and I don’t support it except in rare, serious cases. But in the early stages, it’s a personal choice that should be respected.
Ultimately, legal, safe abortion allows people to make the best decision for their situation, whether that’s continuing the pregnancy or choosing otherwise. It’s a deeply personal choice, and it’s essential to protect people’s right to make it without fear or judgment.
