A little child stood in the middle of a darkness that seemed to have no end. Their own body provided some light as it glowed a warm color of red and orange. Their light illuminated the unknown like a forbidden sunset. They looked to their right, then to their left. All they could see was darkness for miles and miles. The cool, damp stone under her bare feet made her shiver. The air felt thick and lifeless inside her lungs.
Jack found himself in the same, dark unknown place. His body didn't glow a nice warm color to sooth him. Instead, he glowed an icicle blue. His light didn't shine far enough to see much in front of him. He felt cold and tired. The freezing floor made his hair stand up on the back of his neck. He sat down despite his curiosity to explore.
Jack wasn't young, or old for that matter. He was simply...Jack. A husband, a father, a son, and a business man. He wondered about his family. He wondered what they were doing. He wondered if they noticed he was gone, or even cared. Memories played through Jack's mind of his family. He loved them so much. He couldn't remember how he had gotten here. The only feeling he could name was stuck. Completely and devastatingly stuck. His mind spiraled further into the endless depths of darkness
Then Jack could feel another thing. Warmth, love, security. Arms, wrapped around his neck in a firm hug. A small chest pressed against his back. Jack turned and saw his daughter. The small girl who's light shone through him. He watched as she grew up, the world around Jack slowly coming into view. Jack was so focused on the world's embrace that he forgot his daughter's own arms around him.
Old and gray, he fell again into the dark endless void. The cold stone against his feet. He waited for his daughter to come save him. But when he found her, she was in the same position he had been all those years ago. Her light no longer shone like the sunset and she was no longer warm. Then, as Jack watched her fall.
He realized.
It was too late to save her.
