At First

At first I felt your loss keenly,

Then I remembered that my bed was empty,

More times than you were there.

At first I felt lonely,

Then my friends rushed to my side,

And held me when I cried.

At first, I still felt affection,

But then you crushed any chance

Of us ever just being friends.

At first even the thought of you made me cry,

Now it’s just a twinge in my heart.

A painful thing, but a twinge all the same.

At first I wanted you back,

Then I remembered I never really had you,

And you'll never have me again.
