Chapter XXXIII: What a Scene, Part 1
The late afternoon sun hangs low above the University of the Constellations, casting long shadows across the stone walkways and open courtyards. The campus feels quieter now, as if the buildings themselves sigh in relief after a long day of lectures, drills, and controlled displays of power. Students move in smaller groups, their voices tired but lively, conversations filled with plans that stretch beyond classrooms and schedules.
Hageshi walks with his shoulders slightly slumped, his bag hanging loosely from one hand. His steps drag just a little, the kind of exhaustion that settles deep into the bones rather than the muscles. He exhales slowly and rubs the back of his neck.
Hageshi: "I swear, today feels longer than usual."
Inoshiro walks beside him, hands tucked into his pockets. Heat faintly radiates from his skin, the aftereffect of restraining his abilities all day.
Inoshiro: "That's because it is longer. Our class ends at break time, remember?"
Ryujin trails just behind them, gaze drifting toward the sky. His ring rests quietly on his finger, cool and inactive for now. He listens without speaking, his mind still half-caught between lectures and thoughts he does not fully shape.
Ahead of them, Haru pauses near the campus gate, adjusting the strap of his bag. He turns when he notices the others slowing.
Haruto: "You all look like you just survived a disaster."
Hageshi lets out a short laugh.
Hageshi: "Feels like one."
He straightens slightly, eyes lighting up with a sudden idea.
Hageshi: "That's why I'm thinking... hangout."
Inoshiro raises an eyebrow.
Inoshiro: "Right now?"
Hageshi: "Yeah. Our class ends early for once. It feels illegal not to take advantage of it."
Ryujin finally speaks, his voice calm but curious.
Ryujin: "Where?"
Hageshi shrugs.
Hageshi: "Anywhere that doesn't involve desks or exams."
Ryujin: "So, it's going to be like 'Anything can happen Thursday' huh."
Inoshiro: "Hey, c'mon man. We haven't chilled like those wazzup dudes on YouTube."
Hageshi: "Yeah, like last night, I was supposed to watch Pewdiepie sub counts but I remember the assignment on Defense and Nature"
Inoshiro: "So why don't we relax and turn on the radio. Do you like AM or FM? Relax, let's go!"
Haruto hesitates, shifting his weight.
Haruto: (sighs) "I can't."
Hageshi turns toward him.
Hageshi: "Seriously?"
Haru gives an apologetic smile.
Haruto: "I need to help my mother at the store. She's short-staffed today."
Inoshiro nods in understanding.
Inoshiro: "Family duty outranks hanging out."
Hageshi sighs dramatically.
Hageshi: "You're killing the vibe, but I respect it."
Ryujin gives Haru a small nod.
Ryujin: "Next time."
Haruto smiles, relief clear in his eyes.
Haruto: "Next time."
As Haruto heads in the opposite direction, Hageshi pulls out his phone.
Hageshi: "Okay, backup plan. I invite Miran."
He taps quickly, waits, then groans softly.
Hageshi: "He says he has 'other things to do.'"
Inoshiro smirks.
Inoshiro: "That sounds suspiciously vague."
Ryujin: "It always does. Maybe dude has a mom complex"
Inoshiro: "Sweet Home Alabama on that, bro"
Hageshi pockets his phone and exhales.
Hageshi: "Fine. Just us."
Inoshiro: "That's enough."
They pass through the university gates, the city slowly swallowing them in. Streets grow busier, air fills with the scent of food stalls and the distant sound of traffic. Their steps naturally sync as they head toward Kaigan Square, a place that always feels alive no matter the time of day.
Kaigan Square opens before them in a spread of lights, shops, and open space. People move in every direction, laughter and chatter weaving into a constant hum. Neon signs flicker, reflecting off polished pavement.
Hageshi stretches his arms.
Hageshi: "This already feels better."
Inoshiro: "Freedom smells like street food."
Ryujin glances around, eyes alert despite his relaxed posture. He always observes more than he speaks, a habit he never fully abandons.
They stop near a cellphone stand, its glass cases filled with the latest models and accessories. A vendor enthusiastically explains features to a couple nearby.
Hageshi leans in, squinting.
Hageshi: "Why do phones keep getting thinner? I'm afraid I'll snap one in half."
Inoshiro: "That sounds like a you problem."
Ryujin steps back to give someone space—and his foot lands wrong.
The tile beneath him tilts.
Time stretches just enough for him to register the imbalance before gravity takes control.
Ryujin: "—!"
He stumbles backward, arms flailing, and collides with someone behind him. They both go down in an awkward tangle of limbs.
Ryujin winces and immediately pushes himself up.
Ryujin: "I'm so sorry—"
He freezes.
The girl in front of him brushes dust from her skirt, eyes wide. Her hair frames her face neatly, and her expression shifts from surprise to stunned recognition.
Saki.
Behind her stand Rikiyo and Kitsune, equally frozen.
Ryujin reaches out instinctively and helps Saki to her feet.
Ryujin: "Are you hurt?"
Saki shakes her head quickly, cheeks flushing bright red.
Saki: "N-No... I'm fine."
Rikiyo covers her mouth, barely suppressing a laugh.
Rikiyo: "That was... dramatic."
Kitsune tilts her head, studying Ryujin.
Kitsune: "You fall with style."
Hageshi and Inoshiro step closer, eyes widening.
Hageshi: "Oh. It's you."
Inoshiro: "Well, it's a small world."
Saki's blush deepens as she looks at Ryujin.
Saki: "I didn't expect to see you here."
Ryujin rubs the back of his neck.
Ryujin: "Same."
Hageshi gestures around.
Hageshi: "We're hanging out. You three want to join?"
Rikiyo exchanges a glance with Kitsune and Saki.
Rikiyo: "It's girls' day out."
Kitsune nods.
Kitsune: "Sacred rule."
Saki offers a shy smile.
Saki: "Maybe another time."
Ryujin nods.
Ryujin: "Another time."
They part ways with brief waves, Saki glancing back once more before disappearing into the crowd.
Inoshiro grins.
Inoshiro: "You have a talent for dramatic entrances."
Ryujin exhales.
Ryujin: "I trip over air."
Hageshi laughs.
Hageshi: "Let's walk before fate strikes again."
They continue through the square and soon pass a cinema. A massive poster dominates the entrance.
LORD OF THE RINGS
Hageshi stops abruptly.
Hageshi: "No way."
Inoshiro's eyes light up.
Inoshiro: "They're showing it again?"
Ryujin stares at the poster, interest sparking.
Ryujin: "In theaters?"
Hageshi grins.
Hageshi: "We're going."
Inside the alley beside the cinema, a hooded man stands in shadow. His face remains hidden as he presses a finger to a small communicator.
Hooded Man: "They enter the cinema."
A distorted voice answers softly.
Voice: "Proceed."
Inside the theater, the lights dim. Staff hand out 3D glasses.
Hageshi: "This better not be a gimmick."
Inoshiro: "I don't mind gimmicks."
Ryujin slips the glasses on as the opening credits roll.
Then something shifts.
The screen pulses.
Light bends unnaturally.
Through the lenses, the world changes.
They are no longer viewers.
They are inside the story.
Ryujin's ring reacts violently, mist erupting outward like a living thing. A translucent tentacle forms and snaps the glasses off his face—then tears them from Hageshi and Inoshiro as well.
The illusion shatters.
Ryujin stands abruptly.
Ryujin: "This isn't a movie."
They move toward the projection booth.
Hageshi closes his eyes, sand swirling from beneath his feet.
Hageshi: "Sandstorm: Sandglass."
The sand slips silently into darkness.
The connection distorts.
In the booth, blood trails across the floor.
The hooded man smiles beneath his cloak.
Ryujin turns—
Too late.
The hooded man stands behind him.
Ryujin raises his hand.
Ryujin: "Tropical Storm - Blinding Lights—"
Interference surges.
Everything fractures.
And the cinema holds its breath.
