And says that I am here

For another week, another month

In the Ole’ Lowcountry South

I remember that tree

It’s been here since my early days

Watching me grow

Like how a parent watches their child

The sand remains the same

A soft powder between my toes

It gradually grows harder

Like a week-old snow

But there’s something new

A bundle in the gully

Ripped sails and ripped ropes

This is no ordinary boat

It’s changed over time

Just like me

And now must move on

To its own kingdom and own life

What shall I visit next?

What about the Ole’ Park de Place?

A name that’s stuck with me since youth

It’s all too clear

Flowing fountains

Bronze turtles to sit on and shipwreck playsets

I feel my excitement trembling

Construction has taken a toll

My childhood’s vanished

Like the power of invisibility

Which reminds me it’s been fifteen years

But Duke’s is still here

The sap of the cold, iced tea

And the bark that we call meat

Tell me that barbecue shall never leave

The tour’s ended

Now it’s time for the biggie

My grandmother’s house

Who’s watched over it since 2008

A gentle, flowery spray

That rushes through its interior

She is still here

And happy to see me

We speak in my dreams

I tell her my concern

And she replies,

“The Ole’ Lowcountry South is still your amie.”

She leads me to that tree

A cloud of spiritual energy

To keep me cool in the summer heat

“The tree’s grown just like you.”

She wraps her pink bathrobe around me

I may not be able to see her

But she has always been true to her word

And she always comforts me in a time of peril

I saw the toll on the boat

The toll on the sand and the toll on the park

But one thing is for sure
