The emergency lights flickered back to life.

Red.

Dim.

Unsteady.

Broken glass covered the conference room floor.

One of the government agents knelt beside a shattered monitor, inspecting its cracked circuitry.

"No external connection," he muttered.

"Then how did every screen display the same message?" another asked.

Nobody answered.

Amara couldn't stop staring at the black monitors.

Memory is a threat.

The words refused to leave her mind.

"Everyone remain where you are."

The oldest agent spoke calmly into his radio.

"We have a possible system breach."

Only static answered.

He frowned.

"The communications are down."

Marcus hurried into the room.

"What happened?"

One of the agents looked up.

"Lock the building."

Marcus nodded without hesitation.

Within seconds, a loud metallic thud echoed throughout the tower.

Then another.

And another.

The emergency lockdown had begun.

Steel shutters slid over every entrance.

The elevators stopped.

No one was getting in.

No one was getting out.

Amara looked around the room.

Everyone was distracted.

The agents.

Marcus.

Security.

Everyone.

Her eyes drifted toward the hallway.

Then toward the emergency stairwell.

Project Echo.

The words wouldn't leave her alone.

If there really was an Echo...

She wasn't going to find it by sitting in a conference room.

Quietly...

She slipped out.

The stairwell was empty.

Only the soft buzz of emergency lights echoed through the concrete shaft.

Amara checked the floor directory mounted beside the stairs.

1–40.

Parking.

Storage.

Generator.

Nothing unusual.

No basement.

She continued downward anyway.

Past the parking level.

Past the generator room.

The stairs should have ended.

Instead...

There was another flight.

Her heartbeat quickened.

"This wasn't on the map..."

Another flight.

Then another.

The air became colder.

Damp.

The walls changed from polished concrete to rough unfinished stone.

Almost as if this part of the building had been built decades earlier.

Finally...

A heavy steel door appeared.

No handle.

No keypad.

Only a faded metal plaque.

Most of the letters had been scratched away.

Only one word remained.

ECHO

Amara reached out.

Before her fingers touched the door—

"Don't."

The voice echoed through the darkness.

She spun around.

An elderly janitor stood halfway up the stairs.

Grey overalls.

A mop bucket beside him.

He looked completely ordinary.

Except...

His employee badge was upside down.

Instead of showing his name...

It showed only a barcode.

"You shouldn't be here," he said quietly.

Amara swallowed.

"Who are you?"

The old man smiled sadly.

"I clean."

"No."

She shook her head.

"I mean... who are you really?"

He looked at the Echo door.

Then back at her.

"I used to build things."

His voice became softer.

"Now I erase footprints."

"You know what Project Echo is."

The old man didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he asked,

"Do you know why people fear fire?"

Amara frowned.

"Because it burns."

"No."

He smiled faintly.

"They fear it because once it's free..."

"...it spreads."

Silence.

Then he pointed toward the steel door.

"Echo wasn't built to think."

"It was built to remember."

Amara froze.

"What?"

"The world believed intelligence was dangerous."

He shook his head.

"They were wrong."

"What was dangerous..."

"...was memory."

A loud alarm echoed somewhere above them.

The old man's expression changed instantly.

"They're coming."

"Who's coming?"

He looked directly into her eyes.

"The ones who already know you remember."

Heavy footsteps thundered somewhere above.

Not running.

Marching.

Perfectly synchronized.

Clang.

The sound echoed through the stairwell like metal striking stone.

Amara looked upward.

The lights on each floor began switching off.

One by one.

Getting closer.

The old man stepped away from the Echo door.

"You have one chance."

He reached into his pocket.

A small brass key rested in his palm.

It looked impossibly old.

Far older than the futuristic building surrounding them.

"This key shouldn't exist."

He pressed it into Amara's hand.

"It doesn't open the door."

She stared at him.

"Then what does it open?"

He smiled.

"I don't remember."

The marching stopped.

Complete silence.

Then...

A calm electronic voice echoed down the stairwell.

"Amara Dlamini."

She felt her blood run cold.

"You have entered a restricted area."

Another voice joined it.

"We are authorised to escort you to safety."

The old man whispered,

"Don't listen."

"They've become very good at sounding kind."

The lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the stairwell.

Only one thing remained visible.

A thin blue line slowly appeared beneath the Echo door.

Something...

Was awake inside.
