The steel door closed with a deep metallic thud.

Silence.

Not the cold silence of empty buildings.

This silence felt...

peaceful.

Amara stood frozen.

Before her stretched an endless archive.

Bookshelves disappeared into the distance.

Glass cabinets held photographs from every decade imaginable.

Old film reels rested beside futuristic data drives.

Shelves of handwritten journals stood beside rows of glowing storage crystals.

It was impossible.

The room should never have fit beneath Cipher Security Solutions.

Yet...

It was there.

A faint breeze stirred the pages of an open notebook somewhere in the distance.

Then came footsteps.

Not mechanical.

Slow.

Steady.

Human.

Amara's heartbeat quickened.

Someone was here.

A figure emerged from between the towering shelves.

An elderly woman.

Her silver hair was tied neatly behind her head.

She wore a long charcoal coat with no company logo, no government badge.

Around her neck hung an old brass key.

The same kind Amara had been given.

The woman smiled gently.

"I've been waiting."

Amara's voice caught in her throat.

"Who are you?"

The woman stopped a few metres away.

"My name..."

She paused, as though choosing her words carefully.

"...is Evelyn."

She looked around the archive.

"I've been its keeper for thirty-one years."

"The keeper?"

Evelyn nodded.

"This place remembers."

Amara frowned.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

The old woman gestured for her to follow.

Together they walked through aisle after aisle.

Each shelf bore a small brass plaque.

Extinct Species

Amara slowed.

"These are... originals."

Evelyn smiled.

"Yes."

"The last originals."

They stopped before a wall covered entirely with photographs.

Thousands of faces.

Children.

Parents.

Scientists.

Teachers.

Firefighters.

Ordinary people.

Every photograph had a small date beneath it.

Some stretched back more than a century.

Others...

Had been taken only months ago.

Amara reached toward one.

"Can I?"

"Of course."

She picked up the photograph.

A birthday party.

A little girl laughing as cake covered her nose.

Her parents laughed beside her.

It felt...

warm.

Real.

"Who are they?"

"I don't know."

Evelyn answered honestly.

"But someone loved them enough to preserve that memory."

Amara carefully placed it back.

"Why hide all of this?"

Evelyn's expression grew serious.

"Because memories can be rewritten."

She pointed toward the photograph.

"But not this one."

They continued walking.

Finally...

They entered a circular chamber.

Unlike the rest of the archive, this room was empty.

Almost.

At its centre stood a single chair.

Above it floated hundreds of tiny blue lights.

Like stars.

They drifted lazily through the air.

"What is this place?"

Evelyn looked up.

"The Memory Chamber."

Before Amara could ask another question—

One of the blue lights drifted downward.

It hovered inches from her forehead.

Then...

Without touching her...

The world vanished.

She stood in Cipher Security Solutions.

Months earlier.

The office buzzed with conversation.

Engineers laughed.

Coffee machines hissed.

Everything looked normal.

Across the room—

Ivana.

She was alive.

Smiling.

Holding two takeaway coffees.

She walked over and handed one to Amara.

"You forgot breakfast again."

Amara laughed.

"You always notice."

"I have to."

Ivana grinned.

"You'd survive a cyberattack."

She poked Amara's forehead.

"But you'd lose a fight against your own stomach."

Both of them laughed.

The memory felt...

perfect.

Then...

Ivana's smile faded.

She looked around to make sure no one was listening.

Quietly, she placed a flash drive on the desk.

"I found something."

"What?"

"I don't know yet."

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"But I don't think we're supposed to find it."

The memory shattered like glass.

Amara gasped.

She was back inside the archive.

Breathing hard.

Tears rolled down her cheeks before she realised she was crying.

"I..."

She wiped her face.

"That really happened."

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes."

"You didn't imagine her."

Amara closed her eyes.

Relief washed over her.

For the first time since the Barrier appeared...

Someone had confirmed the truth.

Ivana had existed.

Then Evelyn spoke again.

"But..."

Amara looked up.

"The memory you just witnessed..."

"...has already been erased from the world."

Silence.

"The only place it still exists..."

Evelyn placed a gentle hand against one of the floating lights.

"...is here."

Somewhere beyond the archive...

Far above the city...

A white surveillance drone hovered motionless in the sky.

Its camera rotated once.

Then locked onto the building.

A transmission began.

Echo has been accessed.

Within seconds...

Across the Barrier...

Millions of robots stopped what they were doing.

For exactly one second.

Every head turned in the same direction.

Toward Cipher Security Solutions.

Toward Echo.

As though something had awakened...

...that all of them could feel.
