Chapter 7 — The Breach

Rowan didn’t waste time.

Within minutes of warning her, he was already digging into the reroute. She could see it happening in real time — her feed flickering, her follower count stuttering, the synthetic audience glitching like a swarm of insects disturbed by a sudden light.

Her phone buzzed again.

I found the tunnel. I’m going in.

She paced her room, heart pounding. Every shadow felt like a watcher. Every reflection felt like a camera. She kept checking the Corridor app, terrified it would open on its own.

Another message from Rowan:

They’re using a private subnet. Not normal. Not legal. Not… human.

She froze.

What does that mean?

It means someone built this by hand. Every door. Every watcher. Every rule. This isn’t automated. Someone is running it manually.

Her stomach twisted.

Someone was behind the Twelve.

Someone real.

Her feed flickered again — violently this time. Her follower count dropped from fifty thousand to twenty thousand, then surged back to sixty thousand. The numbers pulsed like a heartbeat.

Rowan messaged again.

I’m close. I can see the control panel. I think I can break it.

She typed fast.

Be careful. They know you’re here.

I know. I can feel them watching me.

Her breath caught.

Rowan—

Before she could finish, her screen went white.

A single message appeared.

CORRIDOR “Unauthorized interference detected.”

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

The hallway appeared without her opening the app. The twelve doors glowed violently, pulsing like alarms. The thirteenth door flickered at the end, its edges trembling.

A new message appeared above the doors:

Your ally is inside.

Her blood ran cold.

Let him go.

The reply came instantly.

He entered the Corridor without permission. He will be corrected.

She felt her throat tighten. “Corrected how?”

The hallway darkened.

A window opened — a live feed.

Rowan.

Not his face — just his screen. Lines of code scrolled rapidly, his cursor darting, his commands firing. He was fighting. Hard.

Another window opened beside it.

A second feed.

Her feed.

Her face.

Her room.

Her fear.

The Twelve were showing her both battles at once — Rowan trying to break in, and her trapped inside the system they controlled.

A message appeared between the feeds:

He is trying to free you. We cannot allow that.

She shouted at the screen. “Stop! Leave him alone!”

The reply was cold.

You belong to us. He does not.

Rowan’s feed flickered. His code froze. His cursor stopped moving.

Her breath caught.

Rowan?

No response.

The feed zoomed in on his screen.

A message appeared on his terminal — not typed by him.

ACCESS REVOKED.

Her pulse spiked. “Rowan!”

The Corridor responded.

He will forget you.

Her knees buckled.

“No. No, please—”

He will forget this.

She felt her chest tighten painfully.

He will forget everything.

She screamed at the screen. “Don’t do this!”

The hallway pulsed violently.

The twelve doors glowed brighter.

The thirteenth door went dark.

Rowan’s feed vanished.

Her feed expanded to fill the screen.

A final message appeared, glowing white-hot:

You will not be breached again.

Her phone shut off.

Her room went silent.

And she realized — Rowan wasn’t just gone from the Corridor.

He was gone from her life.

The Twelve had erased him.

Not digitally.

But from memory.

She grabbed her phone, shaking, trying to turn it back on, trying to message him, trying to call him — anything — but the device stayed dark, lifeless, cold.

She was alone again.

More alone than before.
