The Thirteenth Shadow

When I turned seventeen, my shadow stopped copying me.

At first, it was small.

I waved.

It didn't.

Then one night it stood up from the ground and looked at me with glowing silver eyes.

"You finally noticed."

I wanted to run, but every step I took, it took one closer.

"I am your Thirteenth Shadow," it said. "Every human has twelve invisible shadows born from their fears. Only one person in a million awakens the thirteenth."

"What does it do?"

"It lets you steal the shadows of others."

The next morning, I touched my teacher's shadow.

She froze.

Every memory she had vanished.

Another touch...

A thief lost the desire to hurt anyone.

Another...

A dying child stood up, healthy again.

Each stolen shadow gave me a supernatural ability—but every power came with someone else's pain.

Soon governments hunted me.

Scientists called me impossible.

Religions called me a miracle.

Monsters called me their king.

Then I discovered the final truth.

My shadow had never belonged to me.

It belonged to the first human who had ever stolen another person's darkness.

And now...

It wanted its body back.

When people see me walking at sunset, they think my shadow follows me.

They're wrong.

I follow it.
