Chapter 2: The Boy in the Shadows

The enormous iron gates groaned shut behind them.

The sound echoed through the courtyard like a promise.

Lily glanced over her shoulder.

The outside world had disappeared behind layers of thick mountain fog.

For some reason...

She suddenly felt trapped.

"You'll get used to it," Eleanor Ashcroft said with a gentle smile, as though she had read Lily's thoughts.

"I hope so," Lily replied.

Eleanor led her across the courtyard.

Students wandered between stone archways, carrying books and chatting quietly.

Everyone looked perfectly normal.

Until they noticed Lily.

One by one...

Their conversations stopped.

A girl dropped the notebook she was carrying.

A tall boy froze halfway down the staircase.

Two students whispered to each other before quickly looking away.

Lily shifted uncomfortably.

"Why does everyone keep staring at me?"

Eleanor didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she smiled politely at a passing teacher.

"They're simply curious," she finally said.

"We don't get many new students."

The explanation felt rehearsed.

Lily wasn't convinced.

Inside the academy...

Everything looked even older.

The ceilings stretched nearly three stories high.

Golden chandeliers hung above polished marble floors.

Portraits of former headmasters lined the walls.

Yet something about the paintings made Lily uneasy.

As she walked past one...

She could have sworn the eyes followed her.

She stopped.

The portrait looked perfectly still.

"I'm imagining things," she whispered.

"Perhaps."

Lily spun around.

An elderly janitor stood nearby, pushing a wooden cart.

His silver eyes rested on the crescent moon necklace around her neck.

"You should be careful with that."

Lily instinctively covered the locket.

"It belonged to my father."

The old man nodded slowly.

"I know."

Before she could ask what he meant...

He continued down the hallway.

His footsteps disappeared into the silence.

Eleanor opened a pair of heavy oak doors.

"This will be your dorm."

The room was surprisingly beautiful.

A large four-poster bed sat beside a tall window overlooking the forest.

Bookshelves covered one wall.

Fresh flowers rested on the desk.

It almost felt welcoming.

Almost.

Lily set her suitcase down.

"You'll meet your roommate after orientation," Eleanor said.

"Dinner begins at six."

"If you need anything..."

She hesitated.

"...don't wander the academy after curfew."

Lily laughed nervously.

"Why?"

Eleanor's smile faded for only a second.

"Some places are dangerous after dark."

Then the smile returned.

"I'll see you later."

The door closed.

Click.

The room suddenly felt much quieter.

Lily walked to the window.

The forest stretched endlessly beyond the academy walls.

Mist curled between the trees.

Then...

Movement.

Someone stood among the pines.

A tall figure dressed entirely in black.

Watching the academy.

Watching her.

She blinked.

The figure was gone.

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Come in."

The door opened.

A cheerful girl stepped inside carrying two boxes.

She had curly brown hair tied into a ponytail and bright green eyes.

"You must be Lily!"

She grinned.

"I'm Emma Brooks."

"I guess we're roommates."

Lily smiled for the first time all day.

"I'm Lily."

Emma immediately started unpacking.

"I've never met someone from the city before."

"Everyone here already knows everyone."

She paused.

"Well..."

"Almost everyone."

Lily frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Emma looked as though she'd almost said too much.

"Nothing."

She quickly changed the subject.

"So..."

"How was the trip?"

Lily hesitated.

"Strange."

"I kept feeling like people recognized me."

Emma stopped folding her clothes.

Her smile disappeared.

For only a heartbeat.

Then it returned.

"Raven Hollow has a lot of old stories."

"My grandmother says some people are... connected to them."

"What kind of stories?"

Emma opened her mouth—

A loud bell rang throughout the academy.

Orientation.

"We'll be late!"

She grabbed Lily's wrist and hurried her into the hallway.

High above them...

Hidden on the third-floor balcony...

The boy dressed in black watched them leave.

His crimson eyes never blinked.

"They've already found each other," a deep voice said from the shadows.

An older man stepped beside him.

His silver hair moved gently in the wind.

"Should we stop this?" the man asked.

The boy's jaw tightened.

"No."

"It's already begun."

He looked toward Lily as she disappeared around the corner.

"The prophecy doesn't wait for anyone."

The older man sighed.

"Do you think she'll remember?"

The boy stared silently at the crescent moon pendant around Lily's neck.

"Not yet."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"But she will."

And when she does...

Everything in Raven Hollow would change.
