The next morning, I arrived at school a little earlier than usual.

Not because I wanted to.

It had simply become a habit.

I placed my bag on my chair and sat by the window, watching the morning sunlight spread across the school courtyard.

Students slowly filled the classroom.

The room became louder with every passing minute.

"Good morning, Phawin."

I looked up.

Narin stood beside my desk with his usual smile.

"Good morning," I replied quietly.

He looked at the empty seat next to mine.

"Is anyone sitting here?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"Then I'll stay here until class starts."

Before I could answer, he sat down.

He rested his chin on his hand and looked out the same window I always stared through.

"I never noticed this view before," he said.

"What view?"

"The trees... the playground... the mountains in the distance."

I smiled faintly.

"It's peaceful."

He nodded.

"It is."

For a rare moment...

The boy who loved talking sat quietly beside the boy who loved silence.

Neither of us felt the need to fill the silence with words.

When the teacher entered the classroom, Narin stood up.

"I'll see you at lunch."

I looked at him in surprise.

"You eat alone every day," he said.

"So do you."

He grinned.

"Maybe we don't have to anymore."

Then he walked back to his own seat.

The rest of the day passed as usual, but my thoughts kept returning to those words.

That afternoon, we shared lunch again.

He talked about funny things that happened in class.

I mostly listened.

Sometimes I answered with only one or two words.

He never complained.

It was as if my silence didn't bother him.

Instead...

He accepted it.

Day after day, the same routine continued.

He greeted me every morning.

He sat beside me before class.

We ate lunch together.

We walked through the school corridors after lessons ended.

Little by little...

The distance between us disappeared.

I still saw him as a friend.
