The days passed quietly.

Nothing dramatic happened.

No unforgettable confessions.

No promises.

Just ordinary school days that slowly became less ordinary.

Every morning, Narin greeted me before anyone else.

"Morning, Phawin."

"Morning."

That was usually all we said.

Sometimes he would ask if I'd finished the homework.

Sometimes he would complain about a difficult math question.

Other times, he would simply smile before joining his friends.

I never thought much about it.

He treated everyone kindly.

I assumed I was no different.

One afternoon, our science teacher walked into the classroom carrying a stack of papers.

"I'll be assigning partners for this week's project."

The classroom immediately filled with excited whispers.

Everyone wanted to work with their closest friends.

I didn't mind who I was paired with.

I was used to working alone.

The teacher began reading names.

"Nawin and Anan."

"Tharin and Kirin."

One by one, students found their partners.

Then...

"Phawin and Narin."

For a second, the classroom became strangely quiet.

Narin looked at me and smiled.

"Looks like we're a team."

I gave a small nod.

"I guess so."

After class, we stayed behind to discuss the project.

"What should we do first?" he asked.

"The research."

"You really like planning, don't you?"

"And you don't?"

He laughed.

"I usually figure things out as I go."

I couldn't help smiling.

"That explains a lot."

He placed a hand dramatically over his heart.

"Was that... a joke?"

"It wasn't supposed to be."

"I think it was."

For the first time since we'd met, we both laughed together.

Not loudly.

Just enough for the empty classroom to feel a little less quiet.

Over the next few days, we worked on the project after school.

He handled the presentation.

I organized the notes.

Whenever I forgot to bring something, he reminded me.

Whenever he forgot something...

Which happened often...

I reminded him.

"You save me a lot," he admitted one afternoon.

"I just remind you."

"Exactly."

He smiled.

"Most people just complain."

I looked at him.

"I don't see the point."

For a brief moment, he didn't say anything.

Instead, he simply looked at me.

Then he smiled again.

"I like that about you."

I didn't know how to respond.

So I looked back at my notebook and pretended to keep writing.

But for the rest of the afternoon...

His words stayed in my mind.

Not because they meant anything.
