Ink Between Heart Beats - Chapter Five: The Name That Was Never Spoken

Something breathed behind me.

Not loudly.

Not heavily.

Just enough for warm air to brush against the back of my neck.

I couldn't move.

Every instinct screamed at me to turn around.

I didn't.

Eli stood frozen across the room, his eyes fixed somewhere over my shoulder.

His lips parted.

"No..."

His voice cracked.

"It's already here."

The darkness wasn't empty anymore.

It watched.

Not with eyes.

With attention.

The feeling crawled over my skin like invisible fingers tracing every heartbeat inside my chest.

The notebook slammed shut.

The sound echoed through the house.

The lights returned.

Everything looked normal.

The kitchen.

The hallway.

The front door.

Nothing stood behind me.

I spun around anyway.

The sound became deafening.

The faceless figure took one slow step closer.

The ink beneath its feet spread like roots.

Its voice arrived without a mouth.

"You've already started writing me."

I gasped.

The vision shattered.

I was back inside my house.

Collapsed on the floor.

Eli knelt beside me.

"You were gone."

"What?"

"For almost three minutes."

It felt like seconds.

"What did you see?"

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

The words refused to leave.

Like something inside me wouldn't allow it.

My hand moved.

On its own.

I grabbed the nearest pen.

"No!"

Eli tried to stop me.

Too late.

The pen touched the table.

Words poured out.

Fast.

Messy.

Desperate.

I wasn't writing.

I was being written through.

When my hand finally stopped, both of us stared at the message.

Every author owes their story a life.

The room grew cold.

Not winter cold.

Cemetery cold.

The kind of cold that feels ancient.

Then...

My phone rang.

Unknown Number.

I declined it.

It rang again.

And again.

Five times.

Six.

Seven.

Finally, I answered.

"...Hello?"

Static.

A slow scratching sound.

Like a pen dragging across paper.

Then a little girl's voice.

Soft.

Almost kind.

"You're late."

My stomach tightened.

"Who is this?"

"You skipped the first ending."

"What?"

"The notebook doesn't like unfinished endings."

The line crackled.

"Who are you?"

Silence.

Then she whispered—

"You forgot my name."

Click.

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

No caller ID.

No phone number.

Only one word where the number should have been.

The phone screen turned black.

One sentence appeared in white letters.

She remembers you.

I felt my blood freeze.

"I've never met her."

The notebook fell from my backpack.

No one touched it.

It opened to the very first page.

Not Chapter One.

Earlier.

A page I had never seen before.

The paper was yellow with age.

The ink looked decades old.

At the top...

In elegant handwriting...

Were six words.

Property of Jaden Mercer. Age 8.

I stopped breathing.

"No..."

My voice was barely audible.

"I've never seen this notebook before."

Eli looked at me with a fear I'd never seen in another human being.

"You don't remember..."

He swallowed hard.

"...because it already made you forget."

The first page slowly turned by itself.

And beneath it...

A child's drawing appeared.

A small boy holding hands with a tall, faceless figure beneath a sky that was raining black ink.

At the bottom, written in childish handwriting, were the words:

My best friend said he'll come back when I remember him.

The lights flickered once.

Twice.

Then every clock in the house stopped at exactly 3:33 AM.

From somewhere upstairs

A child laughed.

Not loudly.

Not maliciously.

Almost...

...as if it had been waiting years for me to come home.
