Ink Between Heart Beats - Chapter Six: The House That Remembered

The child's laughter stopped.

Silence settled over the house like a funeral veil.

Every clock still read 3:33 AM.

None of them ticked.

None of them moved.

Even time seemed afraid.

I looked toward the staircase.

Darkness pooled there—not the kind cast by shadows, but something thicker. It looked alive.

Eli's voice was barely audible.

"Don't go upstairs."

The words sounded reasonable.

Yet another voice—one that wasn't mine—whispered inside my head.

You promised.

I staggered.

"What was that?"

Eli grabbed my arm.

"What?"

"Didn't you hear it?"

"Hear what?"

My mouth went dry.

The voice hadn't echoed through the room.

It had echoed through me.

Again.

Closer this time.

A stabbing pain split my temples.

Images flashed behind my eyes.

A swing moving by itself.

Someone standing behind him.

The notebook slid across the floor.

No one touched it.

It stopped at the foot of the stairs.

Its cover slowly opened.

The pages turned.

Two.

Three.

Until they stopped on a blank sheet.

Ink seeped upward from the paper like blood rising through skin.

It formed six words.

Come upstairs before she finds you.

Eli read it.

His face drained of color.

"She?"

Before either of us could speak—

A loud thud echoed from the second floor.

Then another.

Heavy footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Not pacing.

Searching.

The ceiling groaned under each step.

Thump.

Whatever was upstairs was in no hurry.

It already knew we couldn't leave.

My phone vibrated.

No signal.

No Wi-Fi.

Yet a notification appeared.

Memory Restored: 3%.

I frowned.

"What...?"

Another notification.

There were only two options.

YES

The screen glitched before I could touch it.

It selected YES by itself.

The pain returned instantly.

This time it didn't stop.

I was eight years old.

Standing in the attic.

The same attic.

Moonlight leaked through a cracked window.

Dust floated through the air.

Someone stood beside me.

A little girl.

Long black hair.

Bare feet.

A white dress stained with black ink.

She couldn't have been older than ten.

She smiled.

Not cruelly.

Sadly.

"Read it," she whispered.

Young me shook my head.

"I can't."

"You already did."

"I don't want him to come."

"You invited him."

She handed me the notebook.

My own childish handwriting covered the first page.

The room darkened.

Something moved behind the girl.

She didn't turn around.

She already knew it was there.

"He likes lonely children," she whispered.

Then—

The memory shattered.

I collapsed to my knees.

My lungs burned.

Eli stared at me.

"You remembered something."

"I..."

The words caught in my throat.

"I've seen this notebook before."

Eli closed his eyes.

"I was afraid you'd say that."

"You knew?"

"My grandmother warned me."

He looked toward the attic door.

"She said there was once a family that disappeared from this house."

My pulse quickened.

"They didn't move."

"They were erased."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"No records."

"No photographs."

"No graves."

"No names."

"It was as if..."

"They had never existed."

The air grew colder.

The notebook wrote another sentence.

They still live here.

A soft knock came from upstairs.

Three knocks.

Exactly the same rhythm as the front door.

Knock.

Then a child's voice drifted down the hallway.

"Jaden..."

It wasn't the little girl.

It wasn't Di.

It wasn't Eli.

It sounded exactly like me.

When I was eight.

"I'm scared."

My blood froze.

Eli whispered a single word.

"Run."

The attic door creaked open by itself.

Black ink spilled down the staircase.

Not dripping.

Crawling.

Like thousands of tiny living veins.

As it reached the first step...

Faces appeared inside it.

Dozens.

Maybe hundreds.

Some crying.

Some screaming.

Some with mouths stitched shut by threads of black ink.

One face pushed farther out than the others.

An elderly woman.

Her lips trembled.

She looked directly at me.

With the last of her strength, she whispered

"Don't let him finish your story."

Her face was dragged back into the darkness.

The ink surged forward.

Every light in the house exploded at once.

Glass rained through the rooms.

The front door slammed shut.

Every window locked itself.

The walls began to tremble.

And from somewhere inside the attic

A deep voice, impossibly calm, spoke for the first time.

"I've waited seventeen years..."

A pause.

Then a sentence that made my heart stop.

"...Welcome back, my first author."
